Henderson Police Has A Cure for Unwanted Medicines

Residents can dispose of unnecessary drugs at drop boxes at police stations

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE City of Henderson CHIEF OF POLICE, 223 Lead Street, Henderson, NV, 89015

Henderson, Nev. – Residents looking for a safe way to dispose of unwanted or expired prescriptions can now discard the drugs in drop boxes at five Henderson Police locations.

The bright yellow prescription drug drop boxes were installed in the lobbies of the three Henderson Police stations, the Henderson Detention Center and the Community Relations Unit inside the Galleria at Sunset. The secure boxes will be emptied regularly and the drugs incinerated.

The drop boxes not only give people a secure, legal and anonymous way to safely dispose of unused medications, but it also helps keep the drugs out of the hands of those who might abuse them and keeps the drugs from going into the water system.

“We encourage all residents to look through their medicine cabinets and join us to safely dispose of any old or unneeded prescription medications,” said Henderson Police Chief Jutta Chambers. “I know that this effort has the potential to prevent a tragedy.”

The drop boxes are locked and secured to the floor at each location. The Clark County Water Reclamation District donated the drop boxes and had them installed at the Henderson locations.

Residents can dispose of the medicines in the drop boxes located in the lobbies at the follow locations:

Henderson Police Main Station, 223 Lead Street

  • Henderson Police West Substation, 300 S. Green Valley Parkway
  • North Community Henderson Police Station, 225 E. Sunset Road

The three police stations’ lobbies are open every day from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

  • Henderson Police Community Relations Unit, inside the Galleria at Sunset, 1300 W. Sunset Road, open weekdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
  • Henderson Detention Center, 18 E. Basic Road, lobby open every day from 8 a.m. until noon and 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
  • The drop boxes are located in the lobbies of the buildings, so residents may discard unneeded, unwanted or expired prescriptions with no questions asked and no forms to complete, and the drop boxes will be available on an ongoing basis.

We ask that people do not use the boxes to dispose of needles or syringes, liquids or powders. Also we ask the pills be in some sort of container or bag. Please do not dispose of loose pills in the drop box.

Henderson Police had a one-day prescription drug drop off last year. The event was so successful we were looking for a way to provide a permanent way for residents to drop off the medications.
