Dignity Health Nevada and Select Medical to Build Acute Rehab Hospital in Las Vegas

A joint venture agreement between Dignity Health and Select Medical Corporation has been made to construct and operate a 60-bed acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital in the Las Vegas area.  The new hospital, expected to open in 2018, will be built directly adjacent to the existing St. Rose Dominican Siena Campus, the largest hospital in Henderson.  Select Medical is the majority owner in the joint venture and will manage operations of the new hospital.  The agreement also includes joint operation of 12 outpatient rehabilitation clinics in the Las Vegas market, including 11 existing Select Medical locations and one Dignity Health center.

Nationally, Select Medical operates 20 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and more than 100 hospitals specializing in long-term acute care, as well as approximately 1,600 outpatient rehabilitation centers and more than 300 occupational medicine centers through its Concentra subsidiary.

The Select Medical partnership enables St. Rose to grow its diverse package of health services to include care for patients who have experienced a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological condition, amputation, orthopedic injury or have other rehabilitation needs.

Verna Akina lived with obstructive sleep apnea for more than 20 years. She had tried everything, including the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine—a mask you wear while you sleep that forces air through the nose or mouth.

“I used to dread going to bed,” says Verna. “I got so sick of trying to make the CPAP work for me that I finally decided to stop using it and let ‘whatever happens happen.’”

So why does Verna now look forward to going to bed? She was one of the first recipients in southern Nevada to receive the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation implant.

Like night and day

“Inspire therapy is designed specifically for those who can’t tolerate CPAPs,” says Frederick Goll, III, MD, board-certified otolaryngologist, who implanted Verna’s device. “It addresses the root of the problem by delivering mild stimulation to the muscles and soft tissues that relax and block the airway.”

The system is placed under the skin of the neck and chest through three small incisions during an outpatient procedure. It then syncs with breathing patterns. If needed, it delivers mild stimulation throughout the night to keep breathing passages open.

Verna’s thrilled with the results, saying that since her implant was activated in early October 2016, it’s been like night and day. “I use a remote control to turn the implant on when I go to bed, then turn it off when I wake up.” Now, she doesn’t nod off while reading, and she can drive without fear of falling asleep.

St. Rose Wins Consumer Choice Award for Fourth Year in A Row

Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican’s Siena Campus was named a 2016/2017 Consumer Choice Award by National Research Corporation. The annual award identifies hospitals across the United States that healthcare consumers choose as having the highest quality and image. The Siena facility is the only hospital in the Las Vegas market to receive this award.

Winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company’s Market Insights survey, the largest online consumer healthcare survey in the country. National Research surveys more than 300,000 households in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia. Hospitals named by consumers are analyzed and ranked based on Core Based Statistical Areas defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, with Consumer Choice-winning facilities being ranked the highest.

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals Launches Baby Growth Tracker Mobile App

Mobile application developed in collaboration with Chandler Regional Medical Center  in Chandler, Arizona, to help parents track their baby’s progress

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals, a Dignity Health member, has unveiled its new Baby Growth Tracker mobile application. This app, which is available by a free download from the iTunes Store and Android Market, provides resources and support for new parents.

The concept for this app was created and initially submitted by Anna Wroble, R.N., a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse at St. Rose Dominican Hospitals, in response to Dignity Health’s Greenlight Challenge, an annual challenge that harnesses the collective creativity and wisdom of 60,000 employees, volunteers, and physicians to solve crucial issues for the organization.

“We were one of three projects selected from hundreds of submissions to receive grant funding as part of the Greenlight Challenge,” said Rod Davis, president and CEO of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals and senior vice president of operations, Dignity Health Nevada. “We’re humbled to have been selected as part of this innovative effort, especially as we aim to learn how emerging mobile technologies can improve quality of care, lower costs and expand access to the communities we serve.” 

Chandler Regional Medical Center in Arizona, a sister Dignity Health facility, partnered with St. Rose in an effort to launch this app in two distinct markets. Children’s Miracle Network also provided a grant to help with the development of the app.

“As a neonatal intensive care nurse, I find that parents are often traumatized when their babies are in the NICU. They don’t know what to expect and tell me they feel as though ‘they have no control’ when it comes to helping care for their tiny babies,” said Wroble. “Having four daughters, one of whom spent time in the NICU, I wanted to be able to tell parents what they can do rather than what they can’t – and that we are listening to their needs.”

The Growth Tracker app includes relevant information for mothers-to-be and allows parents to track their baby’s progress, including height, weight and head circumference, from their birth through the first year. The app also caters to parents who have a baby in the NICU, with educational information on gestational age beginning at 23 weeks, and it includes a video tour of the NICU to help familiarize parents with the specialized unit.

“The app will engage new mothers in monitoring their baby’s feedings, with features such as a time and date log to track breast and bottle feedings,” says Debbie Pavlica, director of the Maternal Child Center at St. Rose. “Educational materials and videos that range from what to expect as your baby develops, to the important role breastfeeding plays in your baby’s growth and development have also been incorporated.” The app also includes original videos about breastfeeding, hand expressing, and formula safety.

Chinese Delegation visits St. Rose

On Friday, June 15, a Chinese delegation from the Ministry of Commerce for Medical and Healthcare Exports and Imports met with representatives from Union Village at Ravella at Lake Las Vegas to explore the concept of the Integrated Health Village and its applicability as a center of excellence in southern Nevada, and how the model could be replicated for the good of others. The delegation also visited and toured St. Rose Dominican Hospitals’ San Martín Campus.

The meeting featured a presentation on Union Village, including presentations on proton therapy, senior living services and Union Plaza, the project’s retail, restaurant, residential and entertainment center.  Additionally, the delegation visted the Union Village site at the northeast corner of US 93/95 and Galleria Drive in Henderson, Nev. 

Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen, Consul General of People’s Republic of China Zhansheng Gao, Nevada’s Director of Economic Development Steve Hill, Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki and several members from the Henderson City Council were in attendance. During their trip to the United States, the Chinese delegation is visiting Harvard and Yale University in addition to Union Village and St. Rose Dominican Hospitals.

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals Performs Minimally-Invasive TAVR

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals is leading the valley in its minimally-invasive heart procedures, including offering the new TAVR procedure, giving patients options for their cardiac care.

St. Rose has successfully completed the SAPIEN Transcatheter Heart Valve by Edwards (TAVR) procedure on several patients, allowing those patients a surgical option when no other option was available.

The TAVR procedure was approved by the FDA in November 2011, as a therapy for adult patients with severe symptomatic native aortic valve stenosis who were determined inoperable for open heart aortic valve replacement surgery by their cardiac surgeons. With the recent opening of St. Rose’s hybrid OR, TAVR therapy is now available for adult patients who are not candidates for traditional open-heart surgery.

“A multi-disciplinary ‘TAVR Heart Team,’ led by cardiothoracic surgeons and interventional cardiologists, is bringing the highest level of heart care to our community,” said Rod Davis, president and CEO of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals and senior vice president of operations, Dignity Health Nevada. “This is another way that St. Rose is meeting the needs of the community and giving physicians the tools they need to care for their patients.”

Up to 1.5 million people in the United States suffer from Aortic Stenosis (AS), and approximately one-third of those suffer from severe AS (usually patients older than 75) which means surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR) is necessary. Studies show that without an AVR, 50 percent of those patients with severe AS will not survive more than two years after symptoms begin.

“The support of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals made this new procedure possible for our patients,” said Dr. Herb Cordero, cardiologist. “Cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons at St. Rose now have the newest technology and procedures to treat patients who would otherwise be too ill for lifesaving surgeries.”

Prior to the approval of TAVR by the FDA, there were no treatment options available for patients who were inoperable because of factors such as age, history of heart disease, frailty or other issues. TAVR enables the placement of a collapsible aortic heart valve into the body via a catheter inserted near the groin rather than by open heart surgery – a much less invasive method of delivery.

Celebrates the Grand Opening of the St. Rose Neurosurgery Clinic

(Henderson, Nevada; May 17, 2012) – St. Rose Dominican Hospitals and Stanford Hospital & Clinics, one of the country’s most respected medical institutions, today celebrated the grand opening of the St. Rose Neurosurgery Clinic.

Catholic Healthcare West is Now Dignity Health

Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) announced today that it has restructured its governance and changed its name to Dignity Health.

In the rapidly changing health care environment, this new name and structure position the entire organization for growth and success. Our mission, vision, and values remain the same, as does our commitment to providing the Henderson and Las Vegas communities with excellent care through our three St. Rose Dominican Hospitals Campuses – Rose de Lima, Siena and San Martin.

These changes will have no impact on the operations, policies, or mission of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals. We will remain a Catholic hospital, sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, following the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, and committed to the overall health of the communities we are so privileged to serve. 

Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the fifth largest health system in the nation, announced today that it has changed its name to Dignity Health as part of a governance restructure that will position the organization to succeed in a changing health care environment.

“This name and structure reflect who we are and what we stand for,” said Sr. Judy Carle, vice chair of the Dignity Health Board of Directors and a Sister of Mercy. “The value of dignity is embedded in our culture. Our mission, vision and values were all formed out of the recognition of the inherent dignity of each person. We are confident that our vision for the organization will be achieved.”

Under the new governance structure, Dignity Health is a not-for-profit organization, rooted in the Catholic tradition, but is not an official ministry of the Catholic Church. The new structure and name enable the organization to grow nationally, while preserving the identity and integrity of both its Catholic and non-Catholic hospitals. The organization’s Catholic hospitals will continue to be Catholic, directly sponsored by their founding congregations, and adhering to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. Dignity Health’s non-Catholic hospitals will continue to be non-Catholic, adhering to the Statement of Common Values.

The changes follow several years of discussions between the organization’s sponsoring congregations, board of directors, and management team about the future of health care and how to best extend its healing mission. Dignity Health’s long term strategic plan is focused on integrated care and enhanced quality that reduces costs. Growth plans anticipate expanded partnerships, which will include both Catholic and non-Catholic care centers. The system currently owns or operates 25 Catholic hospitals and 15 non-Catholic hospitals.

Lloyd H. Dean, the organization’s president/chief executive officer said that the changes would enhance the organization’s ability to work across the spectrum of health care and expand partnerships to deliver high-quality care more efficiently.

“Changing our name to Dignity Health reflects our commitment to excellent care for all in need and to being a national leader in quality care,” Dean said. “The new structure supports our long-term plan to grow and coordinate care, while reinforcing our mission of service to the communities we are so privileged to serve.”

While the name of the organization has changed, Dignity Health will continue to deliver excellent care to all in need and maintain its commitment to being a national leader in quality care. It is investing approximately $1.8 billion in electronic medical records, which are being deployed over the next five years. Dignity Health has also been designated as one of the nation’s first Hospital Engagement Centers by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. The organization is also among those leading the nation in implementing innovative care models that improve care and reduce costs.

Dignity Health has also adopted a new logo, which represents the coming together of many caregivers, services and care centers to create a continuum of care. The three curved sections represent the three parts of the organization’s mission – quality care, advocacy, and partnering. The logo surrounds and embraces a central space, symbolic of how an integrated health system embraces and serves the individual.

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals invites recent nursing graduates to join our Newly Licensed Residency Program, which begins April 23, 2012. This New Grad Program is designed to help Graduate Nurses transition from students to professional nurses while enhancing clinical competence.  Participants in this program develop clinical proficiency through evidence-based practices and supervised clinical experience, with an emphasis on clinical application within the hospital setting. The program is designed around the goal of providing a nurturing, enriching environment where the new RNs can safely, effectively care for patients independently.
